JF - Space Debris ACTournament: Blake | Round: 5 | Opponent: West Des Moines Valley LS | Judge: Anderson, Sam 21 Blake R5 ACI affirm the resolution Resolved: The appropriation of outer space by private entities is unjust.I Value MoralityPleasure and pain are the starting point for moral reasoning—they're our most baseline desires and the only things that explain the intrinsic value of objects or actionsMoen 16, Ole Martin (PhD, Research Fellow in Philosophy at University of Oslo). "An Argument for Hedonism." Journal of Value Inquiry 50.2 (2016): 267. SM Thus the Standard is Maximizing Expected Well-BeingUtil is the only theory relevant to morality because consequences are the only form of value we can experience.Harris 10 ~Sam Harris CEO of Project reason "The Moral Landscape: How Science Can Determine Human Values" 2010~ Contention 1 – Space DebrisLow earth orbit is currently congested with space debris. It is currently at it's brink and will constitute a huge threat if things get worse. David 21'(Leonard David, April 14, 2021, "Space Junk Removal is Not Going Smoothly", https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/space-junk-removal-is-not-going-smoothly/) Current solutions fail to solve – laser blasts, solar sails, ELSA-d, and so on. The only solution is to stay out of space. David 21'(Leonard David, April 14, 2021, "Space Junk Removal is Not Going Smoothly", https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/space-junk-removal-is-not-going-smoothly/) Private company clean ups fail – multiple warrants prove; Overcrowding will become a problem long before debris removal can take on a significant scale, hi costs, and contestation over who will pay. Daily brief 18'(Daily Brief, 10/1/2018, "Space Debris threatens global economy and security", https://dailybrief.oxan.com/Analysis/DB238840/Space-debris-threatens-global-economy-and-security) Contention 2 – Private companies uniquely increase space debris, pushing it past the brinkThree reasons:One of the biggest concerns of private property rights in space is pollution. Cherian and Abraham 07 (Jijo George Cherian and Job Abraham are is a Final Year Students of law, B.A.LLB (Hons) degree program, at the National University of Advanced Legal Studies in Kochi, India, 2007, "Concept of Private Property in Space – An Analysis," The Journal of International Commerical Law and Technology)One of the primary concerns is the degradation of celestial bodies in exercise of property rights granted to persons. The International community fears whether degradation of celestial bodies would have a negative impact on the environment of the Earth. Man seems to have an inherent trait to alter the ecology of his habitat sometimes knowingly, sometimes unknowingly. Space is one of the very few realms that mankind has not been able to effectively pollute, but even that challenge is being overcome. The issue of space debris is one of such concern. Even in the absence of private players, space debris is now assuming alarming proportions, especially since mankind's contribution to the increase in space debris is substantial. In the event that there exists a possibility that, the climate of earth maybe negatively affected, a thorough study must be undertaken to swot up the possible repercussions of such degradation. And if property rights are indeed deemed to be fit to be incorporated into space law, the issue of pollution of space environment will need to be addressed on "war footing". Another classical example is the offer of the company TransOrbital. It is a private company that, through its "TrailBlazer lunar orbiter," is offering the "first delivery service to the moon". TransOrbital claims it is "the only private company to be authorized by the ~U.S.~ State Department and ~the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration~ for commercial flights to the Moon". The company's delivery system will take capsules that contain items of the customer's choice, including business cards, jewellery, art, and cremated remains, to the Moon. While, it maybe argued that such action is detrimental to the ecology of the moon, it cannot be said to be the first of its kind. Although the various Space treaties explicitly prohibit the conducting of nuclear tests in space, space tourism will cause its fair share of problems including despoilment of the moon surface Private companies are given the unique permission to launch as many space object as they want without check back – they exponentially increase debris. Haskins 18'(Caroline Haskins, May, 08,2018, The Future, "Private Space Companies no longer have to follow the law", https://theoutline.com/post/4469/outer-space-treaty-commerce-free-enterprise-bill-spacex-blue-origin-boeing-lockheed-martin) Private entities don't need coordination with one another. With no governing body to coordinate between private entities activities into space, there isn't a way to track their space activity and hazardous debris they produce. This is a unique issue with private entities.Contention 3: Devasting ImpactsSubpoint A: Satellite DamageSpace Debris poses a huge danger to Landsat Satellites – just in 2017 there were 300,000 close calls, even debris a little bigger than a paint fleck can cause significant damage. EROS 20'(Earth Resources Observation and Science Center, January 8, 2020, "Space debris remains ongoing concern landsat and other satellites", https://www.usgs.gov/news/space-debris-remains-ongoing-concern-landsat-other-satellites) The first impact is food uncertainty. Satellites are crucial to crop monitoring and gives agricultural sectors key information about where and when to plant crop. This information is uniquely key during climate change. Haynes et al 2021'(Keelin Haynes, Mary Mitkish, Chris Justice, September 23, 2021, "Landsat 9 to futher nasa's food security missions", https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/blogs/fromthefield/2021/09/23/landsat-9-to-further-nasas-food-security-missions/) Inefficient farming within the context of climate change leads to massive food shortages – we must preserve satellites for efficient farming. Alexander 17'(Peter Alexander, et al, May 2017, "Losses, inefficiencies and waste in the global food system", https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0308521X16302384) Subpoint b: Kessler Effect and entrapmentCollisions of space debris cause fragmentation, producing an uncontrollable cascade of growing debris – this creates a dangerous barrier around earth's low orbit.Liou and Johnson '8 ~J.-C. Liou- ESCG/ERC Nicholas L. Johnson - Orbital Debris Program Office, NASA Johnson Space Center. "Instability of the present LEO satellite populations" Advances in Space Research 41 (2008) 1046–1053~ The impact is making earth's low orbital impossible to travel through. Welsh 12'(Jennifer Welsh, Oct 4, 2012, "Space Debris Could Trap Us on Earth", https://www.businessinsider.com/space-debris-could-trap-us-on-earth-2012-10) | 12/19/21 |
JF - Witchcraft KTournament: Blake | Round: 1 | Opponent: Peninsula KN | Judge: Bandi, Vishvak Blake R1 ACThe resolution is undergirded by a dualistic understanding of systems and being - instrumentalism relies on the flawed conception of a unified subject and static identity, which reinforces inherently static dichotomies – traditionally "male" vs. traditionally "female" spaces– those that fail to conform become viewed as the witch-like monstrous other, to be either eradicated or forced to conform – instead of forcing us to adhere to strictures of conformity, allow us to frame discourse and identity through becoming – the body is a plane on which chaotic, everchanging forces act, and embracing this is keyElla Brians. 2011. ~Ella Brians (B.A., Amherst College, French and Philosophy; M.A., New School for Social Research, Philosophy) works on poetry and poetics from Romanticism to Modernism in English, French and German~, The 'Virtual' Body and the Strange Persistence of the Flesh: Deleuze, Cyberspace and the Posthuman, Deleuze and the Body. https://edinburgh.universitypressscholarship.com/view/10.3366/edinburgh/9780748638642.001.0001/upso-9780748638642-chapter-6. EC We must strive to become the monstrosity of the other - before we can reach liberationMassumi 99 Thus, I embrace the job of the witch in undermining and questioning the gender binary that permeates the gender spheres and debate, in order to combat its pervasive violence and achieve liberation. This means I reject the appropriation of outer space by private entities and curse private entities for trying to appropriate space similar to the way heteronormative spaces have tried to appropriate me.It is just after six pm. Your lips quiver in time with your heart. There are questions you really shouldn't ask yourself when you've lost this much sleep:How is your body yours when others name it for you?How do you take it back? You pick at the fleece of your jacket and swallow hard. You've read about this before, in the book that pulled you back into witchcraft: a story of the first time the author flew, burst in an explosion of feathers and light from her ribs, unfurled into the air and left her body under the trees. You want it. You want so badly to leave your bones. This should be easy. You've never lived in your body, not really. The facsimile of ownership inherent in holding an identity that never matched your biology forced you out as soon as you learned it was possible. So here you sit, under a bookcase, warm light from the table in the corner invading your sight. You close your eyes and try—And try—And try to step out.Your mouth tastes like rich brown bread, tongue a hard twist of muscle against your teeth.Did I ever tell you: teeth carry the oxygen of where you grew up. Are yours full of the ions of some wild land, or the terror of your stuffy room where you drew air across your teeth just to prove you could? You wonder why not both. Aren't they both wild and strange in their own way?Can you have both?Do you want both? You peel away from your skin, pull free of the body that's been taken from you. Ephemeral bones stretch and crack. You have no idea what you want to become. That's fine: after all, is it really shapeshifting when you have no real form to return to?Mutability - HAWKE (Hawke is a full-time student who aspires to be a full-time witch. Ze lives in CA with a couple of middle-aged cats and a steadily-growing bone collection. Those two things are not related, from Arcane Perfection, published 2017) This binary persists in political discussions—witches are often talked over and interrupted by men—studies prove this is to assert dominance and power over women and is just an example of hegemonic masculinity. This gives the aff a prefiat impact of liberating witches in the debate space.Shore 17 The appropriation of space is a move to colonize space for the use of rich, white men. This comes from the same string of ideology that witch hunts have come from – to make sure white men have immediate access to everything and anything they want.Bianco 18 The role of the ballot is to vote for the debater who most performatively and methodologically breaks traditional, binary norms.Gender a is binary construct created by the patriarchy, we must break away form the binary to become something newMassumi 99 (2) | 12/18/21 |
JF Col ACTournament: Durham | Round: 1 | Opponent: Myers Park CE | Judge: Bokhari, Ali I affirm the resolution Resolved: The appropriation of outer space by private entities is unjust.I will begin by providing the following definition:Merriam webster defines appropriation:to take exclusive possession of FramingColonialism is the root cause of structural violence. For the Europeans to take land, they needed to create internal divisions based off of identity and imported their oppressive religious norms.Kalende 14 Western philosophical systems were built off of violence and hence maintain it – they can not include colonized people into their moral calculi because they consider them objects and not subjects- this makes a decolonial framework a pre-requisite to others. The reason why Europeans can claim they are civilizing the natives was because they didn't see them as people in the first place. Let's reverse that.Quijano 07 Thus my single standard is deconstructing colonialist thoughtThe standard has 2 distinct impacts:Instead of creating outgroups for the purpose of power and control, we embrace new ways of thinking and beingColonialism and eurocentrism actualizes violence in both structural and subjective ways-it has already caused two global wars, and the continued focus on objectivity leaves no room for emotional space. This cold, calculated attitude structurally engrains a violence that threatens all life on the planet. C1: Colonizing SpaceSpace exploration and planetary science aren't divorced from past colonial actions – they are dependent encroachment of colonial lands and merely led to an expansion of colonial values into outer space.Tavares 10
The appropriation of space is a move to colonize space for the use of rich, white men.Bianco 18 C2: Private EntitiesPrivate companies are given the unique permission to launch as many space object as they want without check back – affirming the resolution is the only solution.Haskins 18 Private entities are a cornerstone in colonization. We can see the east Indian company which support British colonization into Asia and we can take a look today at the Dakota access pipeline, which allows for private industry colonization of indigenous lands. The question applies to private entities in the appropriation of space. Private actors by their very structure will prioritize economic considerations over moral ones.Tavares 2 Thus I affirm and stand open for cross examination. | 1/15/22 |
