SO - Lay affTournament: Mid America Cup | Round: 6 | Opponent: Lake Highland Prep AV | Judge: Jim Gray The standard is maximizing expected well beingPleasure and pain inherently good and bad. For instance when we touch a stove it hurts, and we do not want to do it again, but when we eat good food, we want to repeat the pleasurable experience. This means we need to maximize expected wellbeing so that we do not hurt people.1~ Death is bad and outweighs – a) people can't act if they fear for their bodily security which comes first b) it destroys the subject itself – kills any ability to achieve value in ethics since life is a prerequisite2~ Actor spec—governments must use util because they don't have intentions and are constantly dealing with tradeoffs—outweighs since different agents have different obligationsExtinction first –1 – Forecloses future improvement – we can never improve society because our impact is irreversible2 – Turns suffering – mass death causes suffering because people can't get access to resources and basic necessities3 – Objectivity – body count is the most objective way to calculate impacts because comparing suffering is unethical4 – Moral uncertainty – if we're unsure about which interpretation of the world is true – we ought to preserve the world to keep debating about itUse epistemic modesty for comparing impacts: that means take the probability of the impact and multiply it by how bad it is.ContentionThe advantage is drug prices,Drug prices are high now, Rajkumar 20S. Prefer:A~ Clash— we don't know if our frameworks are true, but we can debate the topical question. That incentivizes debating both layers instead of solely focusing on framework.B~ Action under one framework doesn't preclude action under another. For example, if I am a Utilitarian I can still have an obligation under util, even if the aff is bad under Hobbes. This means that winning a framing issue doesn't exclude my offense.Underview~1~ 1AR theory – a) AFF gets it because otherwise the neg can engage in infinite abuse, making debate impossible, b) drop the debater – the short 1AR irreparably skewed from abuse on substance and time investment on theory c) competing interps – 1AR interps aren't bidirectional and the neg should have to defend their norm since they have more time. Also, aff theory outweighs neg theory or T: the aff reading theory is a much larger strategic loss because 1 minute of it is ¼ of the 1AR versus 1/7 of the 1NC which means that there is probably more abuse if I'm willing to devote that much more time.~2~ a) Give us new 2AR weighing b/c we need it to check back against new 2n weighing, most reciprocal b) We only get 10 minutes of weighing to their 13 without this c) Time crunched 1ar has no time to weigh and cover substanceRedefine the aff under T and theory instead of dropping the debater a) substance education - bidirectional T means you can always read frivolous T, destroys the time we get on substance b) time skew, the 1AR can't win theory and substance since it's so time crunched and the 2NR dumps on whatever I undercoverThe negative may only garner offense from one theoretical violation – a) k2 education because one shell means we can quickly go back to substance b) checks bad interps because the negative is forced to read an interpretation which is more likely to have actual abuse~3~ Reject new paradigm issues or theory interpretations in the 2nr (a) judge intervention – judges have to insert intervention to see if the 2NR shells are true enough to o/w the 2ar CI (b) 6 min 2nr collapse can check back against 1ar abuse since we have to extend offense twice (c) they get 2nr theory, we get 2ar theory to check back against infinite 2nr abuse, also means new 2nr responses leads to a 13-6 skew on offense (d) you can read 6 minutes of 2nr interps and the 3-minute 2ar becomes impossible.~4~ Faixrness is a voter— A~ It's constitutive of debate—the judge has an obligation to vote for the better debater and evaluate the debate objectively—fairness controls who performed better—this takes out any indicts of normativity since theory would function independently B~ Answers are self-defeating because those arguments rely on the judge evaluating them objectively and fairly—this takes out criticisms of fairness—even if there are some instances where we can't determine whether a position is fair or if there are incorrect uses of fairness, those arguments don't deny that fairness matters C~ If they contest this, vote against them—by indicting fairness, they concede they don't care about the evaluation of the round, so vote aff because I at minimum care about the outcome of the round.5. Aff gets cross apps to theory:~a~ Aff flex- The 2NR has the ability to go for whichever layer they want based on what the 1ar undercovers. I need the ability to handle both layers with the extension of AC arguments. Even if we both have 13 minutes to speak, I have 2 shorter speeches and have to extend multiple warrants. That outweighs- even a perfect 1ar on theory and the aff would be 2 minutes on each issue, whereas you have 6 minutes to collapse.~b~ If I could have changed one part of the affirmative advocacy to meet your shell, clearly the issue isn't with my framework—it's with my advocacy. Thus I should be able to cross apply framework arguments against the shell—framework debate isn't skewed. | 9/25/21 |
