1 - Cites DiscTournament: Glenbrooks | Round: 3 | Opponent: Harvard-Westlake WL | Judge: Brown, Grant Interpretation: Debaters must disclose all constructive positions in cite boxes on the 2019-20 NDCA LD wiki.Violation: see the screenshot in the doc
Standards:1~ Pre-round prep: prep becomes atrocious when you make people sift through 20 word docs to figure out which links you're reading and which impacts to prep. Discourages tricks—you can just hide a bunch of blippy arguments. Also key for inclusion since disadvantaged people have computers more prone to lag and even 3 or 4 can crash the program for them—outweighs accessibility is a multiplier for their impacts. Disclosing in cite boxes solves—people can quickly get a summary of your position and go to open source if they need more information – discludes disabled bodys in the debate space2~ wiki rules—the wiki tells you to disclose like everyone else. Freeloading is bad and o/w—it cultivates passive citizenship and turns any hope of actually solving their impacts which is a voter for education. | 11/20/21 |
1 - Open Source DisclosureTournament: Scarsdale | Round: 1 | Opponent: NewSci LF | Judge: StPeter, Joshua Interpretation: Debaters must disclose all constructive positions on open source with highlighting on the 2021-2022 NDCA LD wiki after the round in which they read them.Violation – they don't for any neg
1~ Debate resource inequities—you'll say people will steal cards, but that's good—it's the only way to truly level the playing field for students such as novices in under-privileged programs who can't bypass paywalled articles.2~ Evidence ethics – open source is the only way to verify pre-round that cards aren't miscut or highlighted or bracketed unethically. That's a voter – maintaining ethical ev practices is key to being good academics and we should be able to verify you didn't cheat | 12/5/21 |
2 - ROTB - Truth TestingTournament: Princeton | Round: 2 | Opponent: Ramsay DF | Judge: Kang, Albert The role of the ballot is to determine whether the resolution is a true or false statement – anything else moots 7 minutes of the nc and exacerbates the fact that they get infinite pre-round prep since I should be able to compensate by choosing – their framing collapses since you must say it is true that a world is better than another before you adopt it.They justify substantive skews since there will always be a more correct side of the issue but we compensate for flaws in the lit. Most educational since otherwise we wouldn't use math or logic to approach topics. Scalar methods like comparison increases intervention – the persuasion of certain DA or advantages sway decisions – T/F binary is descriptive and technical. The ballot says vote aff or neg based on a topic – five dictionaries define to negate as to deny the truth of and affirm as to prove true which means it's constitutive and jurisdictional. I denied the truth of the resolution by disagreeing with the aff which means I've met my burden. | 12/5/21 |
2 - Reps - DeleuzeTournament: Princeton | Round: 5 | Opponent: Princeton VC | Judge: Dossani, Faizaa Their scholarship is hateful and a reason to lose the round—their author endorsed pedophilia and actively advocated against the age of consent law.Doezema 18 ~Marie Doezema (Parisian Journalist). "France, Where Age of Consent Is Up for Debate." The Atlantic, 10 March 2018. https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2018/03/frances-existential-crisis-over-sexual-harassment-laws/550700/ WWDH~ Drop the debater—academic spaces have way too many sympathizers who ignore violence against children, and every act must be challenged in the most unflinching terms because anything else reinforces the epistemic bias in favor of rationalizing disgusting behavior.Grant 18 ~Alec Grant (Independent Scholar, retired from the Uiversity of Brighton where he was a Reader in Narrative Mental Health). 3 - FW - ContractTournament: Scarsdale | Round: 4 | Opponent: SouCar EP | Judge: Cruz, Mariel Contract NCThe reason morality exists in the first place is to regulate our actions towards others. If any moral code is not motivational then there is no reason to do what is right and that code merely fails to escape the skeptical conclusion. Motivational externalism collapses into internalism.Joyce 1, Richard (Professor of Philosophy at Victoria University Wellington, New Zealand). The Myth of Morality. 2001. ~Bracketed for grammatical clarity~ Additionally, agents can only be motivated their own desires; not the external desires of another because:~A~ They are inaccessible through empirical uncertainty – evil demon could deceive us, dreaming, simulation, and inability to know others' experience make externalism an unreliable basis for ethics since we can only verify and access internal drives. ~B~ Because individuals have unlimited wants and those are not communicated ~C~ We only care about our own desires as individuals are self interested and don't care about helping others, even if we did know how to help.Only a contractarian system that derives principles of mutual restraint from individuals' self-interest account for this fact because contractarian principles are necessarily in the interest of all parties involved because they wouldn't constrain their action against their will.Gauthier 86 Gauthier, David P. Morals by Agreement. Oxford: Clarendon, 1986. Print. Additionally, self-interest is determined at the time of the original decision to rise to a norm of mutual self-restraint. For example, I might say that eating ice cream is in my self-interest because I'm hungry even if it will lead to extinction somehow in the future. Thus, the standard is consistency with contractarian principles of mutual restraint, defined as those principles by which individuals would constrain their actions with the belief that doing so would serve their self-interest.Prefer additionally:~1~ Infinite Regress – Only contractarianism can avoid an infinite regress. When we look to an external authority to derive normative conceptions of the good, we are left wondering why a certain good is actually good. Any conception of morality and what people are due begs the question of why our assessment of individual dues ought be preferred over other assessments. Contractarianism avoids this by allowing individuals to construct conceptions of the good based on a rational restriction of their future actions.~2~ Performativity – You agree to 4 minutes of prep and if you tried to go over the judges would down you or tell the tournament to DQ you. Their very performance justifies the NC framework and proves the AC collapses to the NC. | 12/9/21 |

ND - T - Gov SubsetTournament: Glenbrooks | Round: 1 | Opponent: Westwood PP | Judge: Stanley, Abishek Interp - The letter "A" is an indefinite article that modifies "just government" – the resolution must"A" implies a nonspecific or generic reading of the word "government".Walden 20 Walden University ~The Writing Center provides a broad range of writing instruction and editing services for students at Walden University, including writing assistance for undergraduates, graduate students, and doctoral capstone writers~, ""A" or "An"" last modified July 14 2020, https://academicguides.waldenu.edu/writingcenter/grammar/articles SM "Just government" is a generic indefinite singular.Leslie 12 Leslie, Sarah-Jane. "Generics." In Routledge Handbook of Philosophy of Language, edited by Gillian Russell and Delia Fara, 355–366. Routledge, 2012. https://www.princeton.edu/~~sjleslie/RoutledgeHandbookEntryGenerics.pdf SM This applies to the res – 1~ Upward entailment test – "a just government ought to recognize an unconditional right to strike" doesn't imply that "in a society, governments ought to recognize this right" because an authoritarian regime might not recognize it 2~ Adverb test — "just governments usually ought to recognize a right to strike" doesn't substantially change the meaning of the res.Violation – They spec _Standards:1~ Limits – You can pick any government and find a flimsy definition of it being "just". Just is super vague and it's easy to prove any government as just. That's over 123 countries – there are solid affs for China, US, India, South Africa, and Russia - that explodes neg prep burdens and kills clash. Generics don't solve- infinite pre-round prep and encourages reading the same arguments which kills education.
2~ TVA solves – just read your aff as an advantage to a whole rez aff – we don't stop them from reading new FWs, mechanisms or advantages. a~ it's ridiculous to say that neg potential abuse justifies the aff being non-T b~ There's only a small number of pics on this topic c~ PICs incentivize them to write better affs that can generate solvency deficits to PICsFairness and education are voters – debate's a game that needs rules to evaluate it and education gives us portable skills for life like research and thinking.Precision is key – anything else justifies the aff arbitrarily jettisoning words in the resolution at their whim which decks negative ground and preparation because the aff is no longer bounded by the resolution.Drop the debater – a) they have a 7-6 rebuttal advantage and the 2ar to make args I can't respond to, b) it deters future abuse and sets a positive norm.Use competing interps – a) collapses to competing interps – we justify 2 brightlines under an offense defense paradigm just like 2 interps. No RVIs – a) illogical – you shouldn't win for being fair – it's a litmus test for engaging in substance, b) norming – I can't concede the counterinterp if I realize I'm wrong which forces me to argue for bad norms, c) chilling effect – forces you to split your 2AR so you can't collapse and misconstrue the 2NR, d) topic ed – prevents 1AR blipstorm scripts and allows us to get back to substance after resolving theoryEvaluate T before 1AR theory – a) norms – we only have a couple months to set T norms but can set 1AR theory norms anytime, b) magnitude – T affects a larger portion of the debate since the aff advocacy determines every speech after it | 11/20/21 |
ND - T - Strike SpecTournament: Scarsdale | Round: 1 | Opponent: NewSci LF | Judge: StPeter, Joshua Interpretation: The affirmative debater must specify the type of strikes they defend in a delineated text in the 1AC.Violation: they didn'tStandards –1~ Topic lit – strikes are the core question of the topic and there's no consensus on normal means so you must spec.Law Library Resolvability- Debate must make sense and be comparable for the judge to decide which means it's an independent voter and outweighs.2~ Prep skew – I don't know what they will be willing to clarify until CX which means I could go 6 minutes planning to read a disad and then get screwed over in CX when they spec a different type of strike. This means that CX can't check because the time in between is when I should be formulating my strat and waiting until then is the abuse. Key fairness because I won't be able to use the strat I formulated if you skewed my prep and will have a time disadvantage | 12/5/21 |
ND - T - Worker SubsetTournament: Scarsdale | Round: 4 | Opponent: SouCar EP | Judge: Cruz, Mariel Interpretation: The affirmative must defend an unconditional right to strike. This means that the Affirmative must defend that anyone regardless of job or occupation has a fundamental right to strike.Merriam Webster ND, https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/unconditional sid 2~ Violation – They only grant the Right to Strike to ~x group~. That by definition is a condition since they condition the right to strike on a particular occupation.Jensen '18 (Eric; co-director of the Stanford Rule of Law Program, in collaboration with USAID, The Asia Foundation, and Stanford Law School; April 2018; "Introduction to the Laws of Timor-Leste"; Stanford Law School; https://law.stanford.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Timor-Leste-Constitutional-Rights.pdf; Accessed: 10-30-2021; AU) 3~ Standards –a~ Limits – there are endless conditions the aff can place on the right to strike – i.e based on occupation, national holidays, location of strike, etc. That makes the topic untenable since the Aff can just infinitely specify any condition or permutation of conditions which makes predictable preparation and in-depth clash impossible.b~ Neg Ground – specifying scenarios lets affs spike out of core, reduction-based disads like Bizcon and Small Businesses. Links are already non-existent on this topic – letting affs impose restrictions on RTS makes it even narrower.4~ TVA – read this aff but defend whole res. | 12/9/21 |
