SO - Covid AffTournament: UK Season Opener | Round: 2 | Opponent: Vestavia Hills DS | Judge: Eva Lamberson Cr - save lives Developing countries have a disproportionate mortality share from COVID-19. Developing countries have been notably struggling with COVID death tolls throughout spring 2021. Yet these developing countries may have to wait until 2023 to fully vaccinate their population. The reason for this is the domination of vaccines by high income countries and the intellectual property rights that have allowed it. The impact to this is lives - vaccines have saved thousands of lives from COVID-19. Covid-19 has disproportionately impacted women around the world. Sylvie, B. (2020, April 13). SO Covid and Fem AffTournament: Greenhill | Round: 1 | Opponent: Lexington AL | Judge: Ishan Rereddy Moral uncertainty means preventing extinction should be our highest priority. Developing countries have a disproportionate mortality share from COVID-19. Worldwide, patents are disproportionately held by men. This lack of female inventors means women’s health is underrepresented in the biomedical field. One example of how patents hurt woman’s health is access to HPV medications. Developing countries producing their own vaccines is key to reducing prices, but patents are a barrier to this vaccine development. Patents could also be used as a way to restrict access to reproductive rights. The impact to this is gender inequality in the healthcare system, resulting in lower standards of care for everyone. | 9/18/21 |
